Peer-e-Kamil or ‘The Perfect Mentor’ is one of the best and most popular Urdu novels written by the famous Pakistani author Umera Ahmed. It was first published in Urdu in 2004, and later in English in 2011. The book deals with the turning points in intervening lives of two people very unlike each other: a runaway girl, Imama, and a boy named Salar who is gifted with extraordinary intelligence.

Peer Kamil is a story focusing on a deviational sect which violates the finality of our Prophet (P.b.u.h.) meanwhile, narrating a heart wrenching journey of two unhappy souls. It’s a touching account of the ordeals they had to face during their quest. Salar a genius with outstanding I.Q who has complicated queries about life, bumps into hidden obstacles and stumbles over and over again creating problems for everyone around. His extreme adventures have made his parents’ life miserable and they are clueless as to how to deal with him. Imama is a simple ordinary girl with a stable family. Out of the blue she is confronted with the most horrifying question of her life regarding the validity of her faith. She is shaken and afraid and finds it difficult to face reality, but once she discovers the truth, she puts her foot down and endures hardships with intense patience and perseverance. Both are poles apart in terms of spiritual awakening with not one single thing common. Destiny maneuvers their lives to cross each other’s paths, until Salar falls in love with Imama after facing a horrifying experience that totally changes the course of his life. It takes a few years for him to realize that his concern for Imama’s wellbeing is in fact love. This realization shatters him since he has no clue to where Imama has vanished. Holding himself responsible for her disappearance, Salar goes through immense emotional torment. He repents, makes every effort to make up for his transgressions but is unable to get hold of anything promising regarding his quest for Imama. Destiny brings him to a crossroad where he is compelled to marry a damsel in distress. Out of regard for his mentor, he gives up his quest to find his love and accepts his new bride heavy-heartedly. The result of his selfless deed turns out to be very rewarding when he discovers Imama in the guise of his bride. At this point, when he is at the peak of his career, Salar understands the relevance and importance of divine guidance. His soaring I.Q level was simply insufficient to provide the solutions for any of his queries, while Imama’s unflinching faith guided her through the thick and thin of life effortlessly.
